The Secret History of Rock Begins This Weekend

The new radio show is ready.  Finally.  Here's what to expect.

1.  Two hours instead of one.

2.  Up to six topics per show instead of one.

3.  A focus on classic alt-rock and what that music means to the music of today.

4.  Lots and lots of stories about all facets of music.  In other words, the usual stuff from me.

We're currently building network of affiliates.  Here are the early believers where you can hear the show.

Fredericton: 105.3 FM The Fox , Sunday 10a-12n

Halifax:  Live 105 (105.1), Sunday, 6p-8p

Kingston:  98.9 The Drive, Sunday 6p-8p

London:  98.1 Free-FM, Sunday 9a-11a

Ottawa-Hull: Live 88.5, Saturday, 10a-12n

St. Catharines:  97.7 HTZ-FM, Sunday 10a-12n

Toronto:  97.3 Boom-FM, Sunday, 6p-8p

Victoria:  The Zone (91.3), Sunday, 8a-10a

And there are more stations that have signed on and will join the network in the coming weeks.  If you're interested in having The Secret History of Rock on your station, contact Christian at cbailey@astral.com

Is there going to be a podcast available? I'd love to follow, but 8-10am (Victoria) is not a good time for me.

Hi Alan

I understand there are "rules" that do not allow a podcast for your shows due to music rights. I realize this won't change for some time, but what are the regulations on streaming past episodes of a show like yours? There isn't any downloading, and if it were streamed with the commercial breaks it would be no different than a regular radio or online broadcast. I am not from the legal or music industry, so can you shed some light on this for me?

Second the motion for a podcast. Please!

This kind of makes me sad. I loved the format of TOGHONM because it had a central thesis (loosely at times) to every episode. It allowed a narrative that delved into the academic side of music history, and didn't just rely on the minutia that plagues other 'music history' shows (Legends of Classic Rock et al.)

I love your work, Alan, but I really hope the format change doesn't strive to create legends, and instead continue the theme of deconstructing music history in an entertaining format.

Hi Alan,

2nd for any possibility of streaming your show from your site (or anyones for that matter)!! Really, I'm just full on support for hearing you back on the radio man!! Not always possible to be free the times you'll be on, but for now I suppose we all have to try.

From an old fan from the '80s and '90s please podcast for us culture starved New Yorkers. I came from Buffalo where I'd listen Sunday nights on CFNY and crave more!

a) I vote for podcast
b) If no podcast allowed, what about streaming service (RDIO?), what can we do to push this?
c) Not a replacement, but IF none of the above, what about transcriptions?

Hope this help[s AND good to have you back.

Excellent news. Alan.

Someone could always start up an unofficial archive where people can upload recorded shows for downloading. They've done that here with the BBC 1 Essential Mix series: http://www.essentialmix.nu

Since it's not the official site there's not the same need to follow the letter of the law. And publishing co's seem less likely to go after fan sites.

Add my list to the podcast/stream/transcription wanting list. Especially transcription, as I can read that at work when I have a headset on and listening to people whine about their jobs.

I have 248 episodes of The Ongoing History of New Music in mp3 format which basically covers most of 1999-2007 ...Someone recommend a place where I can put those up streaming...and maybe we can do the same with Alan's new show!

October 15, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMark

RE: Mark - I'd kill for a torrent of those 248 episodes, but that wouldn't be legal. Well I guess sharing/downloading show episodes isn't legal either. haha.

no show on boom fm/radio-(Toronto)!!!????

October 16, 2011 | Unregistered Commentergreg

An option for getting Alan's new show on your iPod/iPhone (or any other device with an app that will record radio)...use the TuneIn Radio app and set a timer to record it. I did this on the weekend and set it for the 7AM broadcast on 98.1 Free-FM. It recorded while I slept. Now I can listen to it later on.
