The CD Will Be Around for While Yet
For some reason, some stories have been floating around recently about how the major labels (and others) plan to abandon the CD format by this time next year. I've written that this is bullshit.
Yes, the CD will eventually disappear in the same way as vinyl has "disappeared."
Billboard posted this opinion today:
[R]ecord labels have shown no desire to ditch the CD. The format still accounts for most sales revenue, and labels have been able to encourage the development of new digital business models while enjoying - not relying on - the considerable revenue CD sales provide. It hasn't been the prettiest process in the history of business, but letting the CD die a slow, graceful death has been preferable to premature euthanasia.
