More Music from the Inbox: 22 May 2012

Just when I think I have a handle on the new stuff that's coming out back home I end up here in Singapore at a pan-Asian music conference where I'm being exposed to bands I never knew existed.  Whilst I deal with this firehose--and it's not a complaint, trust me--here's Juliette Jagger with the latest double-filtered music recommendations.

Artist: MS MR, “Hurricane”

Album: Self-titled

This video is incredible. It really nails that subliminal aesthetic. Here’s the idea: It is as if you are inside a mind witnessing flashes of thought. The footage probably spans 50 or 60 years, but the media images shown very clearly reflect what it is to be of the MTV generation.

Sounds like: “The inner workings of your mind.”

Artist: Light Asylum “Dark Allies” LIVE

Album: Snacky Tunes Live Vol. 2

Usually I don’t care for things that sound as if they just came crashing out of the 80’s but there’s such a thumping intensity to this song, and the hook is killer.

Sounds like: A synth laser light show meets from the vault new wave.

Artist: The Tallest Man on Earth, “1904”

Album: There’s No Leaving Now

So here’s the thing about this song, it’s beautiful, but, it really just sounds like Bob Dylan. Now, I will always love Dylan through and through, but I can’t decide if magazines like Rolling Stone should be commending people for making music that sounds like other people’s and right it off as inspiration, or if we should be disregarding them all together for even trying to call it their own. You’ll have to decide this one for yourselves.

Sounds like:  Dylan.

Artist: Death By Orchestra, “ For You No Tomorrow”

Album: The Stars Aligned And Created A Monster

This song sounds like it’s coming loud and clear through a megaphone. I would have loved this band when I was a teenager.

Sounds like: They’re like a Trans Siberian Orchestra version of Brand New.

Link/Listen/Watch:  Sample a bunch of stuff.

Artist: Bravestation, “Tides of The Summit”

Album: Giants & Dreamers

This is Toronto’s Bravestation, and this song definitely calls for an eyes-closed-listen.

Sounds like: Sounds like it feels.
