The Alphabetical Archive for 24 July 2012: Jean Michel Jarre

It's always baffled me why Jean Michel Jarre isn't as revered in electronic music circles the same way as Kraftwerk is.

My first exposure to this sort of music came through Jarre when I heard his Oxygene (1976) playing in a record store.  It later become a big favourite for planetarium shows.

"Oxygene Part 2" is probably is most famous piece.  Give this live performance a look/listen.

The Alphabetical Archive continues tomorrow with something wonderful out of Section K.

I'm going to guess because even though Oxygene was a hit (in relative terms), he didn't exactly innovate or push electronic music much. I put him and MC Curly (Enigma) into the same electronic category.

JMJ's city scale concerts must have been awesome. For that audacity alone he should be more recognized. I got introduced to him via a story on the "The New Music" about his concert in Houston. I remember Laurie Brown (?) saying she barely remembered the music because the scale of the concert playing out on the skyline of the city's buildings was too overwhelming. But that story hooked me to the music.
