Web Project: Remembering The Yonge Street Record Store Strip

When I moved to Toronto more than a quarter-century ago, one of the things I had to see was the famous spinning records sign outside of the flagship Sam the Record Man store on Yonge Street.

Over the years, I, like untold thousands (millions?) of others, spent hours browsing through the racks looking for vinyl and CD gold.

If Sam's didn't have it, there was always A&A, Music World, Tower and a whack of small shops.

Ryerson, owners of the property where Sam's used to stand, are working on a web project that celebrates the Yonge Street record store strip.

Give it a look.  They're also looking for your memories.

A highlight of all my trips to TO from the States.

Almost every Torontonian has fond memories of Sams. On a related note, I used to go to a used record/tape store on Yonge Street a little north of Dundas. A scruffy 2nd Floor space with a worn out white-tiled floor. I later find out the exact same space was once the fabled Blue Note.

This city needs to actually preserve and showcase some of our abandoned Neon Signs. I would have looked at setting up any of the mega rooms at the CNE or (below) Front Street Convention Centres.
A Web Project for one ex-business won't cut-it. Notice how Bell Media simply killed off its inherited 1050 Chum Chart site immediately upon purchase.
