First Concert Accident of the Year Sends Two to Hospital

The last couple of years have been bad stage collapses and concert accidents.  Ottawa Blues Fest. Radiohead at Downsview Park in Toronto.  The Sugarland tragedy in Indianapolis.  The Las Vegas EDM incident.

The first accident of 2013 happened during setup for Miami's Ultra Music Festival when a section of a giant LED screen fell.  One worker was sent to hospital in critical condition while another was listed as serious.

Some 165,000 people are expected this weekend and next to see EDM performers such as Deadmau5, Carl Cox and Fatboy Slim.

The Museum Exhibition of Music Videos

Thirty-five years ago, almost no one understood the need for music videos.  Hell, when MTV first signed on in the summer of 1981, they had a very difficult time getting cable companies to carry the channel.

But as time passed, music videos not only became important sales and promotional tools, but they also evolved as an artform.

The Museum of Moving Image in Astoria, Queens, New York, is now devoting an exhibition to the art of the music video.  When it opens April 3, clips like this will get some serious art world love.

SXSW Panel on the State of Music Curation

Sorting through what music is worth your time can be a daunting thing.  With so much stuff out there, even when you find something you like, you're dogged by the feeling that there might be something even better out there.  But how to find it?  And what are all the other cool kids listening to?

That summarizes the need for curators.  You need a trusted filter to sift out the crap so you can get right to the good stuff.  (This was the role of the old-school radio DJ back in the day, but that's for another post.)

But who should you follow?  How does curation work?  And why should we even care?  Billboard covered a panel on music curation at SXSW this week:

Edwyn Collins Speaks About Recovering from Two Brain Hemmorhages

During an interview at the BBC in February 2005, Edwyn Collins said he felt unwell.  Within a week, he had suffered two cerebral hemmorhages that required extensive neurological rehab.  He still has weakness on his right side, but at least he can sing again.

Edwyn and his wife Grace spoke to Q Magazine about where things are now.  His new album, Understated, will be out on the 25th.

It seems like music has been quite a strong force in the progress you've made in your recovery?

G: "Edwyn struggles to this day with things he wasn't very good at before the stroke. He had an occupational therapist at the beginning and she would come in three times a week and would say to Edwyn: Let's go to the kitchen, what would you do if you were going to make a cup of tea? They were worried that he might have a dyspraxia and would struggle to do things in the right order. So she asked him: What would you do if you wanted to make a cup of tea and he just went, Ask Grace!" [both laugh]

Rapper Makes Best of a Bad Situation at SXSW

Shortly after Australian rapper 360 took to the stage at SXSW, the power went out.  But then some anonymous guy jumped onstage and started beatboxing. This provided 360 a chance to do a little freestyling.
