Damn, But the Foos' Taylor Hawkins Makes a Convincing Iggy Pop

From this photo, anyway.  He could use a few more scars and a lot more needle track marks, but on the whole, this is good casting. Actress Malin Akerman as Deborah Harry? Not so much.  In my opinion, anyway

This is a stlll from the upcoming movie about CBGB.  .

Read more about the movie at The NME.

It Was Just a Matter of Time Before Courtney Love Became a Judge on a Talent Show

From MSN:

Courtney Love is in talks to join a TV talent show as a judge and mentor. The rocker has revealed that she is close to signing up, but she's refusing to name the show.

She tells Wonderland magazine, "I don't know if it's gonna happen or not, but they're looking at me to judge one of these talent shows. Some people go on them and they have butterflies come out of their a--. I'm not saying I'm gonna go on and be a c---, but I would just be myself.

Translation: she'll be a c---.  I'd watch that.

RIP Roger Ebert, Sex Pistols Fan

Roger Ebert may have ended up as a Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic, but back in the 1970s, he was a wannabe screenwriter who worked on some softcore porn with boobmeister Russ Meyer.  It was that work that attracted the attention of a scheming music manager in England named Malcolm McLaren.

McLaren wanted to make a movie about his charges, the Sex Pistols, and believed that Ebert was the man to do it.  The movie--eventually entitled Who Killed Bambi--was never made for a variety of reasons, including some reticence on the part of 20th Century Fox.

Ebert, however, later posted the entire script online for anyone who wanted to read it.  Enjoy.

Apple Getting Closer to Launching Its Streaming Music Service--And It Doesn't Look Good for Canada

It's not a matter of "if" Apple launches iRadio (or whatever they'll call it), it's a matter of "when."  The Next Web reports:

Apple is said to be close to signing a deal with Warner Music and Universal Music Group that would pave the way for its much-rumored streaming music service, according to CNET.

While details of the service remain fuzzy, CNET’s sources suggest that it will be a free service that is connected to iTunes and will work on mobile devices. Apple is reportedly negotiating for a per-stream rate as low as half that of Pandora, while also offering a cut of audio ads.

The report noted that the deals aren’t final yet, so nothing’s certain yet, but it suggested that papers could be signed in the next week.

Apple also seems to be moving aggressively to launch the service in several countries.

“Apple is hoping to quickly roll out in up to a dozen territories, according to sources, including the U.K, France, Germany, Australia and Japan,” report author Paul Sloan wrote.

Uh-oh.  No Canada?  Seriously?  Are we going to be left looking from the outside just like we are with Spotify and Pandora?

It's Almost Polaris Music Prize Time Again! Here Are Your Key Dates

Polaris Music Prize season is almost upon is.  The country will soon be debating the merits of albums released over the last twelve months, cultimating with the naming of the ultimate winner in September.

Here are the key dates for this year.

June 13 - Long List announcement in Montreal.  This is when we'll find out the names of (=40 semi-finalists nominated by the 200+ members of the Polaris jury, which consists of broadcasters, critics, bloggers and other music industry people.  (Full disclosure:  I am one.)

July 16 - Short List announcement in Toronto.  Those 40 will be whittled down to 10 after another round of jury voting.

September 23 - Gala and announcement of the 8th-ever Poloaris Music Prize in Toronto.  This year's cash prize will once again be $30,000.  I have no idea where the gala will take place since the Masonic Temple is being sold by CTV and won't be available.

Polaris also announced a new sponsor for this year's event:  Scion, the hip, young division of Toyota.

And in case you need reminding of past Polaris winners, here's the full list.
