Weekly Music Sales Report - 12 December 2012

With just a couple of weeks to go in the 2012 fiscal year, things have picked up just in time for Christmas--but it's not enough.

For the first time in 2012, year-to-date sales are below last year.  Canadian sales are -1%, which is a bitch considering that things looked so good for 49 weeks.

Physical CD sales are down 12% from last year while digital album sales are up 28%.  Digital tracks are up 23% over last year.

Michael Buble's Christmas album--the one he released last year--jumped from #4 to #1 with 19,000 units, an increase of 62% from last week.  In the year since its release, it's sold more than 600,000 copies in Canada.  If you ever need a reason why artists record Christmas albums, that's the only explanation you need.
