Broken Social Scene Inspires a Short Story Collection

John sent me this link to Exclaim! that tells of how BSS's You Forgot It In People" inspired a book of short stories.

A few months ago, Toronto publisher House of Anansi launched a Broken Social Scene-themed contest, asking writers to pen a short story based on a song from the band's celebrated 2002 album You Forgot It in People. Now, the contest's finalists have been revealed and compiled for an e-book.

The Broken Social Scene Story Project: Short Works Inspired by You Forgot It In People will be out on May 30 through House of Anansi's short story imprint Astoria. It includes 13 stories — one for each song on the record, from which their titles are taken.

Read about the whole thing here.

Another Must-Read for Artists Serious About the Music Biz

I've been invited back to work as an instructor/mentor at The Peak Performance Boot Camp, a hardcore artist education effort that happens each summer at an isolated outpost in the BC Rockies.  Artists have to compete for the right to attend--and the successul ones are worked very, very hard over the course of a week.

The boot camp is faciliated by Music BC, headed up by Bob D'Eith, a tireless supporter of emerging artists in that part of the country.  He's just published an ebook entitled Career in Music: The Other 12-Step Program.

Like Coalition Entertainment's Artist Entrepreneurship program (read about that here), Bob's book focuses on things all artists must do--and from a Canadian perspective, too.

If you're hoping to make a career out of music, this book could be the difference between getting it right and flaming out.

Are You a DJ? This Book Might Help

From the people at DJ Lounge:

At DJ-Lounge we believe that successful promotion is just as important as the quality of the work you're sharing. Because of that, we want to help young professionals by giving them the necessary tools to have an upper hand in their careers.

Our writers over here in the lounge have been hard at work developing a free comprehensive resource to help DJ's, labels, producers, and managers get the most out of their promotion online, on the street, and on the stage.

We share our new ebook with you because we think you (and your artists) could benefit greatly from the variety of enlightening information within. The PDF can be downloaded on our website for free, but If you would like to support it, we ask that you to please let us know what you think about the ebook.

New Book on the History of Metal

It's called Louder Than Hell: The Definitive Oral History of Metal.  Senior writer at Revolver, Jon Wiederhorn and radio producer Katherine Turman spend 746 pages going through what makes metal metal.

Here are a few highlights:

--Tommy Iommi of Black Sabbath talks about the sheet metal accident that cost him his fingertipes.

--The story behind the original (and censored) artwork for GnR's Appetite for Destruction.

--Why Ozzy ate a bat.

More at USA Today.  Thanks to John for the tip.
